Well Becca, Gatsby is a very shy and timid man and it is very ironic that such a shy man would throw such grand parties. He is not sociable at these parties because he is not a very sociable person and is maybe using these parties as a way of compensating for being so timid. The other motivation he could have for throwing these parties is that he is hoping that Daisy will show up to them.
I agree with you Cole. Gatsby at nature is a aloof and shy so it makes you wonder why he would so often have large and lavish parties. I think that one of the reasons he has these parties is to find some source of companionship or emotional support. This theory goes back to the saying,"You cant buy happiness" which is what Gatsby is trying to do. He is also having these parties to attract and impress his lustful love, Daisy. Gatsby wants to be sociable but it is hard for him to get out there.
I think he is scared of becoming sociable. In the first few chapters it mentions how Gatsby replaces a girl's dress even though it was not his fault it got ruined, and the characters decided that Gatsby replaced the dress because he didn't want enemies. I think he avoids being sociable because he does not want enemies. I think he has no faith in his social skills even though they must be good if he managed to get Daisy to love him.
I wondered the same thing until I got more into the book. Like you posted on my blog, one of the reason Gatsby has his parties is to gain Daisy's attention. Because of this reason, Gatsby has no real need to socialize with his guests. Gatsby did socialize with Jordan, but she's friends with Daisy. Nick and Gatsby socialized, but they previously knew each other from the war, and again, Nick knew Daisy. Many of the guests also come to Gatsby's parties just to take advantage of him. Gatsby most likely doesn't want to be friends with those who took advantage of him and his money.
I think Gatsby has these parties because he is lonely. He doesn't really have any friends, and he is in love with Daisy so he doesn't have a girlfriend. He uses his parties as a way to make up for his loneliness, although that doesn't really work. As Emily said, he also used his parties as a way for Daisy to notice him. He hopes that by throwing these parties and becoming well known throughout the society, Daisy might leave Tom because Gatsby now has enough money and riches to support her lifestyle.
