Poetry Wrap-Up

What's one thing you've grown to understand, appreciate, or value about poetry that you haven't in the past?

     The first time Mr. Dubois told our class that our next unit was going to be poetry, my initial reaction was boredom.  I have never enjoyed poetry, so for the first couple of days I had a negative attitude towards it.  As the days went by I began to open my mind towards poetry and began to enjoy it a little more.  I did not enjoy analyzing the poems because I am not very good at it.  However, I like to read poems that relate to the author.  I appreciate reading about poets and seeing how their poetry relates to their axperiences.  I have begun to like to read the poems that tell a story and you do not have to think about it too much.  I value reading poetry for relaxation and enjoyment.

~The American Dream~

       I believe the American Dream is like snow in your yard.  Each layer represents the beauty and the complexities of life.  Most of the top is beautiful, sparkly and smooth like the way everyone strives to make their life.   Parts of the top layer are like a discolored patch of snow; there may be some spots in your life that don't go the way you planned.  Footprints or marks pressed into the snow may be the negative people or things that influence you.  Underneath the top layer of snow is the opportunities you were given, the hardships you faced, and the time it took to get to where you are now.  You are still hopeful and thankful though for your next opportunity (the next snow fall) where you can strive for perfection.
       This is different from some people's perspectives because it may seem to them that there is never another snowfall.  This also could be due to their attitude which separates people's ideas of the "Dream".
